Le Coq Sportif was founded by Emile Camuset in 1882 in France. As a sports enthusiast, he wanted to make jersey shirts for his cycling, football, and rugby friends. The brand originated as a family business, with a sports clothing factory in Romilly-sur-Seine in north central France, releasing its first catalogue of sports clothing in 1929. The company's name and trademark are based on the Gallic rooster, a national symbol of France.

The brand accelerated in the 1950s, when they signed a deal in 1951 to make the yellow jersey for the Tour de France. The company provided jerseys to Louison Bobet when he won three consecutive tours from 1953 to 1955, as well as being the official kit provider for the France national football and rugby teams, and signing an agreement with the French Olympic Committee so that athletes wore LCS sportswear at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. As well as this, they also sponsored many hugely successful sports personalities, such as Yannick Noah and Diego Maradona.

Le Coq Sportif is still known for its sports sponsorships and partnerships, and has been the official partner of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games since March 2020.
